How to recover an unsaved document that won’t save in Photoshop cs5.
This was not the way to end the day. -.- This is Photoshop cs5 failing to save a psd with “Save As…”
The error is ”Could not save as “filename.psd” because of a program error.
If this happens to you, do not fret as I did. If you Google the problem, you will find people freaking out, and rightly so, but no solutions are offered. Insults and unhelpful negative opinions of people’s abilities to use Photoshop are readily available though. The internet gets a bozo button today from me for that.
The solution turned out to be simple. Photoshop has somehow lost its ability to write to the drive it also uses as a scratch disk (usually the default). I can’t say for sure why, but the solution is simple. Pop in an SD Card or USB thumb-drive and save the document to that drive from Photoshop. Drag a copy of the PSD to your desktop and open it in Photoshop to ensure it saved correctly. Close Photoshop. Reboot your computer for good measure, and restart photoshop with your successfully saved file.
